Subject
The Manchuria Incident/Crisis
Description
This satirical cartoon depicts the inertia of the League of Nations faced with Japanese imperialism in China. Whilst the League stated Japan had undermined Chinese sovereignty, they were powerless as Japan simply walked out of negotiations. The 'Nine Powers Treaty' was signed by key nations including Japan in 1922 to conduct business and trade with China without undermining its status as a sovereign nation. Here, we can see the 'Nine Powers Treaty' alongside other important diplomatic documents pierced by the bullet of a Japanese gun.
