Model Plays

This photograph was taken by Gang of Four leader Jiang Qing and depicts a scene from a model play. Eight model plays were produced in total and were adapted to various media from television to comic books etc. This led to the joke that 'eight hundred million people watched eight plays.' Jiang Qing was a former film actress and may have used her status in the industry to legitimise her role in planning the model plays.
