The Korean War 1950-1953 (朝鲜战争)
Description
An account of the resource
One year after the People’s Republic of China was founded, Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist Party were drawn into an international conflict of epic proportions: The Korean War. In 1950, the North Korean army crossed the divide in the hope of controlling the entire country. Prompted by Stalin and fearing a US attack, China lent a volunteer army to North Korea in October 1950, intending to demonstrate loyalty to the Soviet Union who supplied them with aid and expertise, counter the threat of the United States and achieve a sense of national pride in a fledgling, new-born nation.

US Imperialism during the Korean War
Description
An account of the resource
Mao Zedong described American imperialism as a 'paper tiger,' something that appears powerful but turns out to be harmless and weak. This image was published in August 1950 in China Pictorial, a Maoist magazine, after the Korean war broke out but before China entered the conflict. This image cemented the US as the enemy in the imaginary of the Chinese people who increasingly supported China's entrance into the conflict despite many domestic issues that China still had to contend with.

Description
An account of the resource
This PBS documentary gives a comprehensive overview of the Korean War starting from 10 minutes in and ending at 15 minutes. The filmmakers particularly draw attention to General MacArthur's policy of ordering troops beyond the 38th parallel dividing line which the Chinese took as a threat to their sovereignty. This was one of the reasons that drew them into war.

The bravery of Chinese soldiers during the Korean War was unsurprisingly a key source of propaganda and a morale booster to encourage troops to sign up for military service in the conflict. This image depicts Chinese troops resolutely crossing the Han River in the face of US bombardment.

This image depicts United States and British Prisoners of War protesting for peace in Korea. Whether or not this protest was spontaneous as the People's Daily claims is difficult to ascertain. However, it is certain that both the United States and Britain were war-weary having sustained major losses during World War Two just five years before.
