                <text>This French newspaper depicts the president of the Republic of China cutting his braid. Under the Qing Dynasty led by the minority Manchu tribe, all men had to wear this particular hairstyle in order to demonstrate allegiance to their Manchu rulers. The same day as the child emperor Puyi abdicated, Yuan immediately cut his braid to symbolise the inauguration of China as a republic. The republic would quickly receive international recognition as this French newspaper spread demonstrates, with foreign powers hoping for a stable regime to protect their economic interests. </text>
