Description
China pictorial was established in 1950, roughly a year after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The magazine was instrumental in visualising the progress of the first five year plan during which rapid industrial development occurred. In Anshan, the pre-existing steel mill was expanded to become the largest in China. Alongside the extensive scale of the mill as a backdrop, the photographer positions two workers engrossed in their tasks, their gaze fixed towards the sky, to signal progress and hope for the future. Over the course of China’s five year plan steel production would increase from 1.3 million tonnes to 5.2 million tonnes.
