Source 7: Zhou Ruichang (1974) Study the historical struggle between Confucians and Legalists , deepen the criticism of Lin and Confucius (Propaganda Poster)
Subject
The topic of the resource
Zhou Enlai
Description
An account of the resource
The 'Criticise Lin and Confucius' campaign was an elaborate attempt to indict the Chinese premier Zhou Enlai with traditionalist thinking supported by Mao's wife Jiang Qing. Note the imagery in this propaganda poster relates to industrial development with construction occurring in the background alluding to the power of the urban proletariat during the Cultural Revolution. Zhou had appealed for fairer treatment of scholars during the Cultural Revolution and brought back many formally purged cadres to the high ranks of the party. This was the last campaign of the Cultural Revolution.
