Subject
Chiang Kai-Shek's strategy towards Japanese imperialism
Description
Modern Miscellany was the most popular satirical journal in Shanghai. Here, a sculpted, comically enlarged head of Chiang Kai-Shek is pasted on to an illustrated cartoonish body. Chiang is surveying a Go board, synonymous in Chinese culture with strategizing. However, there are no visible counters on the board, suggesting that Chiang has no interest in resisting Japanese aggression. Instead, the presence of a hot-water carrier symbolises he intends to follow the traditional custom of bathing before bed to get a good night’s sleep.
