Chinese Land reform (土地改革)
Description
An account of the resource
Land reform, in a Chinese context, denotes the abolition of the landlord class, returning farmland to peasants in the spirit of Sun Yat-Sen’s proclamation ‘He who tills the land shall own it.’ Soon after the Communists won the civil war, many peasants held the deeds to their own land for the first time.

Source 5: A Landlord is executed near Fujiang, Xinjiang Province (1949)
Description
An account of the resource
This photograph depicts the execution of a landlord during the land reform era. Estimates of landlord deaths as a direct consequence of land reform are circa 1.5 – 2 million. In certain areas, it became apparent that innocent people who simply had slightly more wealth than their neighbours were becoming denounced as class enemies and wrongly accused of exploiting others.
