Subject

Nationalist invasion of Manchuria during the Chinese Civil War

Description

The Nationalist Party decided to invade Manchuria in 1946 after the withdrawal of Soviet Troops. This photograph depicts an initial Nationalist victory in Shenyang. However, it soon became apparent that the Nationalists had committed a serious error in military strategy by invading Manchuria at such an early stage of the conflict - the CCP had many strongholds in the area such as Harbin as well as the support of a sympathetic local population. The tide of the Civil War soon changed in favour of the Communists.
