Subject

US Imperialism during the Korean War

Description

Mao Zedong described American imperialism as a 'paper tiger,' something that appears powerful but turns out to be harmless and weak. This image was published in August 1950 in China Pictorial, a Maoist magazine, after the Korean war broke out but before China entered the conflict. This image cemented the US as the enemy in the imaginary of the Chinese people who increasingly supported China's entrance into the conflict despite many domestic issues that China still had to contend with.
