May Fourth Movement

Description

The May Fourth Movement was an anti-colonial and nationalist movement that protested against the Beiyang Government's response to the Treaty of Versailles which formally brought World War One to an end. As part of the treaty, the imperial powers decided that the former German concession of Shandong should be handed over to Japan. This prompted outrage in China which can be seen by the protest photographed here in Beijing.
