Description

This gold statue of Mao Zedong was funded by a local businessman and Mao enthusiast. However, the statue proved divisive, conjuring memories of the Great Famine that blighted Hunan province. The authorities decided to remove the statue, a decision which, in turn, sparked criticisms from supporters of Mao, demonstrating the diverse range of opinions the legacy of Mao ignites amongst Chinese people today.
