Subject

Foreign involvement in China's Railways

Description

This cartoon is a damning satire of the Qing Dynasty's policy to grant foreign ownership of China's railways. The cartoon shows a ruling Manchu official being run over by a foreign train to symbolise growing resentment to foreign interference in the Chinese economy. This policy was one of the many catalysts for the Xinhai Revolution and the overthrowing of the Qing Dynasty.
